EPISODE 19: SUCKING AND FILLING

Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank: The coolest dermatologist in NYC?

Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank: The coolest dermatologist in NYC?

We've had a few listeners ask us for our advice on how to deal with cellulite, so we decided to bring in a pro—well the pro—to discuss. Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank is a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon and the self-proclaimed "fat expert" of NYC. In this episode, he schools us on fat transfer, Cellfina, CoolSculptingSculpsure, Fraxel, Ultherapy, microneedling, and Infini. We also discuss our recent travels: Jenn went to Germany to learn about Weleda, and Jess was in L.A., where she got a facial from Sonya Dakar (we are big fans of her Organic Omega Booster oil). After that, we bring things down...way, way down...to a tingly, relaxed place with a discussion of how makeup tutorials—especially those from Lancôme's creative director, makeup artist Lisa Eldridge—can trigger ASMR, an autonomous sensory meridian response. We also take a look at some of the tingle-inducing videos on the iPleasing Instagram feed. Finally, we weigh in on the recent New York Times article "Mom Hair: It Exists. Now What to Do About It." (And if you doubt this hairstyle's existence, please see this SNL sketch.) Our #raiseawand picks this week: Clinique Cream Shaper for Eyes in Chocolate Lustre and It Cosmetics Your Skin Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ … Color Correcting Full Coverage Cream + Anti-Aging Hydrating Serum (yes, it's the longest name ever, but it's 💣).

EPISODE 18: THE WORD NO WOMAN LIKES TO HEAR

Autumn Whitefield-Madrano, author of our new favorite book

Autumn Whitefield-Madrano, author of our new favorite book

We hit lots of hot topics in this week's episode. First up: Halle Berry's undercut tattoo look—and our thoughts on the potential grow-out. If that particular haistyle isn't for you, perhaps you'd be more into a "slick-back," the scraped-back, wet-haired look that all the cool girls have been wearing on the red carpet lately. (Please tweet us some suggested names for this style because we really don't know what to call it.) We also talked about problems with the fast-beauty makeup model, like the subpar Becca X Jaclyn Hill palette and the broken Jeffree Star Skin Frost highlighters. Finally, our producer/test bunny Vicky filled us in on how it's going with her Plume natural lash enhancer. Best of all, we have Autumn Whitefield-Madrano, author of the newly released Face Value: The Hidden Ways Beauty Shapes Women's Lives, on the podcast to talk about about why her book is the next The Beauty Myth (our words, not hers—she's not braggy like that). And in case you weren't taking notes (What, you weren't taking notes?!?), here are the products and places we mentioned during the episode:

Dove Style + Care Nourishing Amplifier Mousse
Black Diamond Lash Sealant
Lash Loft in New York City
Lash Forever in New York City
Benefit They're Real Push-Up Liner in Beyond Purple
Maybelline New York Fit Me Foundation
The Kokko foundation-matching app
Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer
Klorane Dry Shampoo
Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey
Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil
#raiseawand: Aesop Reverence Hand Wash
#raiseawand: Simple Human Wide View Automatic Sensor Mirror

EPISODE 17: BEAUTY OTAKU

Troysama, Makeup Otaku (Listen to the episode and you'll get it)

Troysama, Makeup Otaku (Listen to the episode and you'll get it)

Wow! Guys! FIRST: Thank you so much for sending our little pod straight to No. 1 on the iTunes Fashion & Beauty charts. We are humbled. And psyched. If we could give you all beauty goodie bags, we would.

Onto the show...

This week, we have makeup genius Troy Surratt on the show. He got his break as the late, great Kevyn Aucoin's assistant, and is now a star in his own right: He works with celebs like Adele and Uma Thurman, and has created the incredible Japanese-inspired line, Surratt Beauty.

Before that, we discuss Jess's visit to the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Boudoir— and the Racked article that's getting Jess into a tizzy. Plus, Jenn basically performed surgery on her cherry angiomas—and didn't end up in the ER.

Finally, we raise a wand to Shea Terra Organics Egyptian Carrot Seed Oil and...well, baths.

Other products mentioned during the show:

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillowtalk

Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift in Brooke S.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish

Charlotte Tilbury The Retoucher Pen

Surratt Beauty Auto-Graphique Eyeliner in Chat Noir

Surratt Beauty Artistique Blush

EPISODE 16: LITERALLY A HOT MESS

Writer Virginia Sole-Smith is smiling because she's no longer in cosmetology school.

Writer Virginia Sole-Smith is smiling because she's no longer in cosmetology school.

This week we welcome writer Virginia Sole-Smith to the Fat Mascara studio so she can tell us about her behind-the-scenes experiences in the beauty and health industry—including what it's like to be all up in a stranger's business giving her a Brazilian wax. (Hint: She's thinking about how much her back hurts, not your vulva.)

We also discuss the Jidue Eye Massager, the new lip filler Juvederm Volbella XC, and what to do about gray hair. The products mentioned include Clairol Natural Instincts semi-permanent hair color and Color Wow Root Cover Up.

Finally, we raise a freakin' want to Waxelene, a non-synthetic petroleum jelly alternative, and YSL Mascara Vinyl Couture in 3 Green.

EPISODE 13: UNICORN BALLS

Kat Von D, you are a FORCE

Kat Von D is the perfect podcast guest: She's crazy-smart, zero B.S., and funny, too. On this episode, Kat talks about bullies, refusing to compromise on cruelty-free beauty, and lip color that looks good on everyone.

But before that:

Fat Mascara goes to Washington! We took to the capital to celebrate Kiehl's 165th birthday and their support of the Smithsonian's Cosmetics and Personal Care Collections Digitization Project, which is INCREDIBLE: a museum specialist has photographed, ID'd, and described info for approximately 90,000 personal care and cosmetics objects in the Smithsonian's massive online "beauty" museum, which anyone can peruse online. We strongly urge any beauty obsessive or history buff to check it out, but be warned: It's kind of addicting! We geeked out when we saw some of the products in person, and we talk about some of our favorites on the show. For example, Outdoor Girl Face Powder and this ad for deodorant soap, which was really sad and demented ("The Lonely Mrs. K").

Then, Jenn reveals her shocking acne fix. We don't want to give it away, but you might need this. Or something similar and maybe not as expensive. Just listen—as usual, Jenn has a cool study to back it up!

And let's keep our eye on Calvin Klein, shall we? They just announced the launch of the (drop dead sexy) Deep Euphoria. Combined with their most recent gender-fluid fragrance and the brouhaha over the upskirt shots and vaginal-grapefuit denim ads, Jess feels like CK may be coming home to their weird, sexy roots. Hallelujah, bc if they're not, we're all doomed.

We talked about a lot of products on this episode. Here's a shopping list:

Restorsea Pro All Day Every Day Lotion 3x

Tata Harper Irritability Treatment

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick

Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation

Anna Sui Cosmetics

Jess, Patrick, Jenn, and Manny in the Fat Mascara studio

Beauty influencers Patrick Starrr and MannyMua swing by the studio to get real real. Our favorite part of the interview is when they talk about the weird tension between traditional agency/editorial makeup artists and the beauty vlogger community. Yomi Abiola, photographed by Kalle Gustafsson, Italian Vogue

Yomi Abiola, photographed by Kalle Gustafsson, Italian Vogue

Yomi! We fell in love with this model, journalist and activist a few years ago on a press trip to Ghana, where she cracked us up with her hilarious/cutting truth bombs. Now THIS was a model with could hang with! On Fat Mascara, she gets real about modeling, diversity, beauty, and trying to bring social accountability to fashion. And products, of course.

Visit her website, YomiAbiola.com, as well as  thefemleague.com , the women's media platform she founded.

Check out her latest story in Italian Vogue.

Follow her on Twitter at @yomiabiola

Before that, we swap spa stories (Jenn's Floating Lotus experience is pretty trippy). Then, a moment for Prince and Bowie: They had the balls to wear makeup but were still the hottest guys in the room. Then, we answer our first listener question—we love the engagement, guys. This one is about concealer—just in time for allergy season.

Also! Friends, this is the last week to enter The Fragrance Foundation giveaway! Remember, you can vote at fragrance.org/vote - Just be sure to share your vote (at the prompt) and tag @fatmascara !
